Who must send a Tax Return?
Self-assessment tax return is filed by the following persons mentioned below –
- Sole trader earning more than £1000
- A partner in a business partnership firm
Generally, you don’t have to send return if you are earning money from wage or pension only. You need to send it if you are earning any other untaxed income from –
- Renting out a property
- Savings, investment & dividends
- Tips & commissions
- Foreign income
There are some other reasons for sending tax return too. Tax return can be send in order to –
- Claim income tax reliefs.
- Prove that you are a self-employed person. For ex – By claiming tax free childcare or maternity allowance.
Sending a Tax Return to HMRC
After doing Self Assessment Registration, you can easily send your tax returns to HMRC in paper form or online or with the help of commercial software.
Use Commercial Software or Paper Form to Send Tax Returns
Send your tax returns to HMRC with the help of commercial software or paper form. You must use one of these options to send returns –
- In case you are getting income from a partnership firm
- In case you are getting income from trust & estate
- In case you are getting income from trust
- In case you are an NRI & living abroad.
- In case you are a religious minister
- In case you are a Lloyd’s underwriter
- In case you are making profits on selling or disposing of one or more assets.
Note - Use of paper form SA970 is mandatory in case you are sending a tax return for trustees of registered pension schemes. The deadline for filing paper form is 31st October (31st January in case you are a trustee of a registered pension scheme or a non-resident company)
