Register for Self Assessment Tax Return Online
Registration for self-assessment tax return is necessary to file tax return online. It is needed in the following scenarios –
Register for Self-Assessment Tax Return if you are Self-Employed or Sole Trader
In case you were filing tax returns in the past but missed filing it last year, you need to register for self-assessment & class 2 national insurance. Do register by 5th October in your business second tax year unless you have to face fines & penalties from HMRC.
If you sent a return online before
A 10 digit UTR number is needed to file tax return online in case you have done registration before. If you don’t know the same, you can find your UTR. You can also re-register online by filing form CWF1.
If you never sent a return online before
- Register online with HMRC
- In response, HMRC will send you a letter with 10 digit UTR number
- Set up your account for the self-assessment online service
In case you are already having a UTR number (if sent paper return before or applied through phone registration), still you need to create an account to avail online service.
What happens next?
You will receive a letter from HMRC within 10 working days (21 days in case you are abroad) containing UTR number along with an online activation code. Online activation code is only needed first time when you sign in. In case you didn’t receive this code or lost it somewhere else, you can get a new activation code.
Other ways to register
You can also register by filling the on-screen form, printing it and posting it to HMRC. You need to fill the form completely as you cannot save a partly completed form. Kindly keep all your information ready and make use of appropriate web browser to file your return.
Update the browser in case you are using internet explorer 8 or use a different web browser.
Register for Self Assessment Tax Return if you are not Self-Employed
If you want to send your tax return but missed filing it last year, you need to register for self-assessment by 5th October.
After doing registration, you will receive a letter from HMRC containing UTR number within 10 working days (21 days in case you are abroad). In case you are already having a UTR number, you can file your return easily. If you didn’t know the UTR number, wait for HMRC letter or find your UTR. UTR number is necessary to file tax return online.
If you sent a return online before
If you sent a return online before – Just sign in to your existing account and send your return to HMRC.
If you didn’t sent a return online before
After doing registration, you need to perform certain tasks in order to set up your account online –
- Create a new online account
- Use your UTR number (received in letter from HMRC) to sign up for the self-assessment service.
After signing up, you will receive an activation code by post within 7 working days (21 days in case you are abroad). After receiving the activation code, sign in to your account and send you return to HMRC. However, in case you do not receive the activation code or lose it, you are having the option to replace activation code.
Register for Self Assessment Tax Return if you are a Partner or a Partnership Firm
It is mandatory to register for self-assessment, if you are a partner or a partnership firm. You must also register your partnership in case you are a nominated partner. A unique 10 digit UTR number is needed to file your tax return. Find a UTR number in case you lost it.
There are different ways to register for –
- Limited Liability Partnership
- In case you are a partner but not an individual. For ex – A company or a trust.
