Self Assessment Tax Return Deadline
It is mandatory for every eligible individual to submit self-assessment tax return or any money you owed to HMRC by the specified deadline. Deadline for submitting self-assessment tax return through various modes are mentioned below -

In case you are a sole trader or self-employed person or partner in a partnership firm | 5th October 2019 |
Tax return submission in paper form | 31st October 2019 |
Tax return submission online | 31st January 2020 |
Tax payment you owed to HMRC | 31st January 2020 |
In case you are making advance payment towards your bill, the last date for submitting the same is 31st July. It is also known as “Payment on account”. You are liable to pay penalty in case you are late whereas you can appeal against the penalty if you are having a reasonable excuse.
When the Self Assessment Tax Return Filing Deadline is different?
- In case you want HMRC to automatically collect the tax from your wages & pension, submit your online return by 30th December.
- In case you are a trustee of a registered pension scheme or a Non-resident company, you cannot send a letter online & it must be received by HMRC in a paper form by 31st January.
Note – HMRC may also give you a different deadline in writing or by e-mail.
Partnership Returns if you have a company as a partner
In case one of your partners is a limited company whose partnership accounting date is between 1st February & 5th April.
The deadline for the same is mentioned below –
- In case of online returns – 12 months from the accounting date
- In case of paper return – 9 months from the accounting date
