If you no longer a part of UK and residing in some other country, you may still have to file a tax return in UK with HMRC. In case you are no longer a UK resident, you still need to complete the tax return if you are earning income in UK or even if you owe no tax.

  • If you are earning income in UK as a self-employed person
  • If you are receiving profits from a UK partnership firm
  • If you are not living in UK but do some or all of your work in UK
  • If you are making capital gains from sale or disposal of assets in UK
  • If you are earning rental income from a property situated in UK

Non Resident Tax Return Penalties

The due date for filing self-assessment tax return for non-residents is 31st October for paper submission and 31st January for online submission. In case you missed the deadline, you need to face fines & penalties from HMRC. The penalties imposed by HMRC are specified in the table below –

1 day Late Penalty of £100
3 months late Penalty of £10 per day up to maximum of £900
6 months late Further penalty of maximum £300 or 5% of the tax payable in case return has been submitted on time
12 months late Another penalty of £300 or 5% of the tax payable in case return has been submitted on time
