Online Self Assessment Tax Return Filing
If you are filing tax returns online for the first time
Before filing the tax returns online, you must have UTR number to use online service as well as the code (received via post) to activate your account. How these things takes place depends upon:
- Whether you are a self-employed person
- Whether you are not a self-employed person
- Whether you are a business partner or a partnership firm
Login in to file your tax return
In order to verify yourself as an authenticated person, you need to prove your identity by using Government gateway or GOV.UK verify.
Ways to register for self-assessment
There are three ways to register for self-assessment, if you are –
- A self-employed or a sole trader
- Not self employed
- Registering as a partner or partnership
When you cannot use the service
In order to send self-assessment tax return, you can download the form or use commercial software if you are –
- A partnership firm
- A trust or estate
- Reporting multiple “Chargeable gains”. For ex – Life insurance
- A Non-resident
- A Lloyd’s underwriter or religious minister (In case you are getting income from a trust)
