What is U1 Form?

U1 Form is submitted by an individual in order to verify periods of insurance & employment or unemployment in an EU country. It is used to avail unemployment benefits in the new country. It can only be issued by the country where you worked and paid the social security contributions.

For Ex – An individual moved from UK to Spain and worked there for around 1 year. After completing 1 year in the company, he lost his job due to recession. Now, he is an unemployed person and to claim unemployment benefits in Spain, he needs to present U1 Form in front of Spain authorities unless he will not be able to avail those unemployment benefits in Spain.

When to obtain U1 Form?

If you are planning to leave your country to work in some other country in EU, you need to request U1 Form before leaving the country in order to avail unemployment benefits in the new country. The detail on U1 Form is used by the individual to establish his or her entitlement for unemployment benefits.

Where to obtain U1 Form?

U1 Form can be obtained from the employment service or social security institution in which you are currently insured for unemployment benefits. It is your right to ask for U1 Form but its submission is not compulsory. The same rule is applicable when you become unemployed in your own country after working in another EU country and claims for unemployment benefit.

In order to avail unemployment benefits, you need to present the U1 Form to the employment service. In case, you missed filing the same, all the information will be exchanged by the institutions through electronic communication.

How to obtain U1 Form?

There are two methods by which you can obtain U1 Form from UK –

Online Procedure to Obtain UI Form

You need to keep P45 or P60 handy so that you can easily enter your NI number and your employer’s PAYE reference number into the required fields. In addition to it, you need to include the copies of the following documents –

  1. Wage slips from each employer for last 3 years
  2. In case you are not having the wage slips, you need to attach the copy of P60 forms for last 3 years.
  3. “End of contract” letter from the last employer specifying the reason of ending the work relationship.

In case you are not having any of the above documents, you need to attach the copy of P45 form for last 3 years and send it to the address mentioned below –
