If You Need To Change Your Return

If you want to make changes to your tax return after filing the same, you can make changes by –

  1. 31st January 2020 for 2017-18 tax year
  2. 31st January 2021 for 2018-19 tax year

In order to make changes to your tax return, you need to write to HMRC. Updation of your bill is done on the basis of what you are reporting. You may have to pay more tax in order to claim a refund.

Note – In case you need to report your foreign income, there is a different procedure to it.

Update your Self Assessment Tax Return

Updating of tax return totally depends upon the way you filed it. You can update your tax return in the following ways –

Online Tax Return

To change your tax return online, follow the steps given below –

  1. Sign into your account with government gateway user ID & password
  2. Choose “Self-assessment account” (in the absence of this option, skip this step)
  3. Choose “More self-assessment details”
  4. Choose “at a glance” appearing on left hand side menu
  5. Choose “Tax return options”
  6. Choose the tax year for which you want amendment.
  7. Finally, go into tax return, make your correction & file it again.

Paper Tax Return

In order to amend your tax return via paper, you need to download a new tax return and send corrected pages to HMRC. You need to write “Amendment” on each page of your tax return as well as include name & unique taxpayer reference number too.

Kindly check your self-assessment paper for the address. In the absence of address, you need to send your corrections to the address for general self-assessment queries.

If you used Commercial Software

In case you want to amend your tax return via commercial software, you need to contact your software provider. If your software is not able to make corrections, contact HMRC.

Write to HMRC to Change your Tax Return

You must write to HMRC in order to change your tax return from 2016-17 tax year or earlier. You need to include the following things in your letter -

  1. Tax year you want to correct
  2. How much tax you have paid – Underpaid or overpaid
  3. Why you think you have paid little or too much tax

In case you are claiming a refund, you can claim it up to 4 years after the end of the tax year. If you are making a claim, you need to include the following things in your letter –

  1. That you are making a claim for over payment relief
  2. In which way you want to be repaid.
  3. Evidence that you paid the self-assessment tax for the relevant period
  4. You didn’t claim the same refund back which you are claiming now.
  5. A signed declaration that all the details specified by you are correct and complete to the best of your knowledge.

Changes to your bill

If you will update your tax returns online, amended bill will be displayed over the screen straight way. Within 3 days, your statement will also show the following –

  1. Difference between the older & the amended return in order to understand that whether you owe more or less tax.
  2. Any interest

Note – Sign in to your account with the help of government gateway user ID & password and click on “View statements” to view the statement.

If you owed tax to HMRC

In case you want to claim a refund, you need to login to your HMRC account and click on “Request a repayment” option appearing on the menu in the left hand side of the window. Refund will take around 4 weeks to be credited into your account.

Note – You may not get a refund in case your tax amount is due in the next 35 days.

If you need to pay more tax

Updated bill will also show –

  1. The paying deadline
  2. The effect on any payments on account you need to make.

If you sent an updated paper return

Updated bill is sent to you by HMRC within 4 weeks and if your bank details are mentioned on your tax return, your claim will be credited into your bank account directly.
