What is Short Validity Passport (SVP)?

Short validity passport is a passport issued to the individuals to travel abroad and it is usually issued for a shorter period ranging from 1 to 5 years.

Circumstances under which Short Validity Passport is issued to the Applicant

  1. Issued to students – Short validity passports are issued to students in case they want to travel abroad for the purpose of appearing in international examinations like SAP, TOEFL etc. These passports are issued to students in an urgent situation when the applicant unable to apply through the regular channels as normal passport procedure takes much time in processing the application. In such cases, the application form is processed under Tatkaal scheme along with the proof of urgency and the verification certificate as per rules & regulations.
  2. Issued in case of non-delivery of passport – Short validity passports are also issued to those individuals whose passports are not delivered and lost in transit. After completion of certain formalities, these passports can be extended to a full term passport (10 year passport)
  3. Issued in a pending criminal case – Short validity passport is also issued in case any applicant has a criminal case pending against him/her and wants to travel abroad, the applicant can apply for a short validity passport. In such cases, applicant needs to take written permission from the court where the case is pending. In a pending criminal case, passport is issued to the applicant for 1 year only after taking the court permission.
  4. In case of Indian residing overseas – Indian nationals residing overseas can also apply for short validity passport in case they want to travel to India for a short period of time. In such case, passports is approved & issued immediately to the applicant for a time-period of 1 year from the issuing date.

Documents required for short validity passport are as follows (Any 3 to be submitted) –

  1. Aadhaar card
  2. Telephone bill
  3. Water bill
  4. Gas connection proof
  5. Rent agreement
  6. Voter Id card
  7. PAN card
  8. Bank account passbook
  9. Railway identity card
  10. Arms license
  11. Freedom fighter identity card
  12. Photo identity card
  13. Income tax assessment order
  14. Parent’s passport copy (In case of minor)
  15. Spouse’s passport copy
  16. SC/ST/OBC certificate
  17. Municipal birth certificate
  18. Pension document

How to Apply for Short Validity Passport?

The process of short validity passport is given below –

  • For Indian Applicants
    1. Go to official portal of passport Seva by clicking this link - https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink
    2. Register yourself as a new user by clicking on “Register now” link on the home page (if not a registered user)
    3. Registered applicant will be provided with a user ID and password after online registration. By using User-Id and password, you can easily login to your account on the website.
    4. Select short validity passport from field “Type of passport” and choose “normal” or “Tatkaal” as your submission.
    5. Fill the required details in the form and submit the same online.
    6. Click on “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link given under “View saved/submitted applications” to schedule an appointment at Passport Seva Kendra or passport office.
    7. Go to passport seva Kendra on scheduled date where appointment has been booked. Do not forget to carry your original documents.
    8. After successful verification of the documents, the passport will be issued to the applicant within a time period of 1-3 days.
    9. Collect your short validity passport in person from Passport Seva Kendra.
  • For Overseas Applicants
    1. Follows the above steps and submit your application form along with the documents in person at an Indian consulate in your country
    2. After documents verification and payment of processing fee, passport will be issued to the applicant within a time period of 1-3 days.
    3. Collect your short validity passport from the Indian consulate.

The processing fees for short validity passport is as follows –

Validity of Short Validity Passport

Short validity passport is valid for a short period ranging from 1 to 5 years depending on the circumstances of the applicant. Short validity passport is normally issued for a time period of 1 year.

Renewal of Short Validity Passport

Short validity passport can be renewed for a maximum period of 10 years on assistant passport officer’s discretion.
