There are many cases where the owners of the business are using the counterfeit GST numbers to make additional income and they do not pay these charges to the Indian government. To avoid the taxes, some small-scale businesses deploy these types of tactics. It is an extra income source for them.

The GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique identification code of 15 digits and this code is a substitute of the TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number). State code is denoted by the first two digits. The next 10 digits are the business entity PAN. The 13th digit is the registration number (with the similar PAN) which entity of the business has in the state.


By default, the 14th digit is Z and the 15th digit will be check code deployed for errors detection. The 12th digit is an alphabet, because up to nine, it is numeric and the 10th registration initiates with A. If in the similar state, the entity has fifteen registrations, then it conveys F. How to verify the GST number of the bill?

On a bill starting with the alphabet GST, you can find a number of identification. You can make a note of this number. Visit the portal https://services.gst.gov.in/services/searchtp. You are required to input the GST number in the box. The next step is to input the Captcha code and click on “search” button. Under the legal name of the business, the registered business name will be shown.

A business which is recently registered might not have an GSTIN but it does have a provisional ID. You can deploy that Id and check this ID on the link https://www.gstsearch.in/track-provisional-id.html. Here you are required to fill information such as State, ID Type, Registration No and Captcha code. After clicking the “Submit” button, you should able to view the entity name.

How to make a complaint of fake GST Number?

After the registration, the business entity is required to print their provisional ID or GSTIN on the bill. Without this, they are not able to charge the GST. It is not mandatory that all the business owners are required to register under the GST. If the turnover is less than twenty lakhs rupees or if the turnover is ten lakhs rupees if the place of business is located in Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam.

Sometimes it might be happened that some business owners not registered or are not eligible for GST can still charges GST from the customers and do not provide amount collected under the GST to the government.

GST collection on old bills:

Some shop or business owners are collecting Goods and Services Tax on old bills instead of GSTIN (GST Identification Number). They charge the customers with State GST and Central GST which is an unfair trade practice. From 1st July, 2017 it is essential for the businesses to use GSTIN on their bills and to migrate to the GST.
